Pointe Claire is a sleepy town on the island of Montreal that is known as the West Island. Many people unfamiliar with the word tend to think it's a distinct island that lies west from Montreal, but in fact this part of West Island is home to anything and everything that is found in the city of Lachine west. Amanda Brugel was born there, and it is true. But she only spent a short period of time there. Brugel grew up in Courtice near Oshawa, Ontario. She had a dream to dance, but a growth spurt meant that she grew beyond her dance partners. According to an article by The Toronto Star, she confessed, "In heels I am 6'1 inches tall." As I grew older, my male companions, I stopped. Many former dancers turn into acting. In Brugel's case it was a suggestion from a drama teacher at the high school which pushed her to take a step in the appropriate direction. The teacher encouraged her to audition for a part in her school's production. The student tried it out, and eventually was chosen to play the lead on the show Anne of Green Gables. The show was a recipient of the Fine Arts Talent scholarship at York University, where she completed her studies in Theatre and graduated with a Bachelor's degree of Fine Arts in 2000.
